In 2006, a visionary group of Pathways Board members had the foresight to purchase the land east of our Carpenter Road administrative building to be the future site of a freestanding inpatient care center.

Pathways needed to grow into that vision, and so it has – as the population in northern Colorado steadily grew and with it the demand for dedicated inpatient hospice beds. Successive groups of Board members and leaders at Pathways had the patience and wisdom to hang on to the land, knowing that someday we would build the care center.

Pathways Inpatient Care Center (PICC). PICC is the first and only freestanding hospice inpatient care center in northern Colorado, only the sixth such facility in the state, and one of only a couple of hundred nationwide.

Everything about the PICC, including the artwork throughout the property, reflects the northern Colorado communities we serve and exists to serve patients from across the region.

On behalf of the staff and volunteers of Pathways, we would like to welcome you to the Pathways Inpatient Care Center. We know that this may be a particularly challenging time for you and your loved ones, so please let us know if there is anything we can do to help. Our goal is for our patients and family members to be as comfortable as possible during their stay with us.

The following information is designed to serve as a helpful guide during your stay. Should you have any questions about available services and amenities, our staff and volunteers are happy to  provide additional information or clarification.

The Hospice Philosophy

Hospice means “given to hospitality.” Originating in medieval times it referred to a resting place for poor, sick, weary, travelers where they would be taken in and given care. Today, hospice refers to a system of care giving which provides specialized treatment and comfort to those who are traveling the road at the end of life.

Hospice affirms life and recognizes death as a normal process. For a patient with an incurable illness or disease, a curative, aggressive approach to care is replaced with a palliative approach. Palliative care is the comprehensive management of the physical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs of the patient, through relief of suffering and control symptoms. The goal of palliative care is to achieve the best quality of life, defined by the patient and family, in their own personal journey through the last days of life. Hospice also enables the patient and family to prepare mentally and spiritually for a death that is satisfactory for them, through bereavement support. Hospice neither hastens nor postpones deaths. All aspects of care are intended to bring comfort to celebrate life and to maximize the patient’s control and autonomy.

Policies

To help us achieve our goals of comfort for patients and families as well as safety for everyone, we have instituted the following policies.

Confidential Information

To respect the privacy of all patients and their family members, Pathways observes a strict confidentiality policy, set down in Federal regulations outlined in the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA). We will not give out any information about a patient without permission from the patient or his or her health care agent if a Medical Power of Attorney (MPOA) has been activated.

Care Planning

A family conference is available with our Interdisciplinary Team, should you desire to discuss your loved one’s care in greater detail or need to discuss more complex medical or social issues.

Personal Items & Valuables

We encourage patients and their families to bring personal items from home to create a sense of familiarity and greater comfort for the patient. However, patients and families are discouraged from keeping valuables in the Pathways Inpatient Care Center. Pathways does not assume responsibility for lost or stolen items that have not been logged into the Clothing & Valuables Inventory Sheet at admission to the Care Center. If you bring personal electrical equipment, we ask that it be approved by the Pathways Inpatient Care Center staff prior to use. Any items left behind will be disposed of after 14 days.

Visitors

Visitors are welcome 24 hours a day with patient or family consent. If you want to limit visiting hours or restrict who may visit, please speak with Care Center staff. Visitors are welcome to stay overnight in the patient’s room, though we ask that you please refrain from sleeping in any of the common areas (e.g., Family Lounge, Great Room, Family Café). Visitors with colds or infectious diseases are discouraged from visiting. Visitors who are disruptive or interfere with a patient’s plan of care will be asked to leave. For safety purposes, we ask that visitors wear shoes whenever they are outside of the patient’s room.

Children
Children of all ages can visit, but an adult other than the patient should always accompany children under the age of 14.
Pets
Pets are welcome to visit for a brief time under the following conditions:
  • The pet must be well groomed and bathed
  • The pet must be on a leash
  • The pet cannot stay overnight
  • Alert your care team that the pet will be visiting
Smoking & Alcohol

The Pathways Inpatient Care Center is a tobacco and alcohol-free facility. No smoking or alcohol is permitted, including vape pens and marijuana.

Hand Washing

To prevent infections, please wash your hands frequently and remind other visitors to do the same.

Employee Lounge

In order to ensure privacy and quality of care for all our patients, the Employee Lounge is not open to the public.

IV Pumps

For patient safety, please do not attempt to adjust the settings on IV pumps. If there are questions or concerns, please speak with your nurse.

The Facility

Patient Rooms

Our spacious private rooms have been specially designed with the needs of the patients and families in mind. Each patient room has a recliner and love seat that both fold out into beds, allowing two people to sleep comfortably in the room. Each patient bed is equipped with the Critical Alert nurse call system. Your care team will orient you to its use. The HDTV screen in the room is equipped with Comcast cable. There are multiple shelves in the room that you are welcome to use to display photographs and other objects from the patient’s home. Please do not hang or attach anything to the walls.

Common Spaces for Family Member and Other Visitors

The Pathways Inpatient Care Center provides multiple spaces throughout the building for family members and visitors to gather, read, eat, catch up on work, or otherwise get some respite from the bedside without having to leave the facility. While you are welcome to rest throughout the building, we ask that you do not sleep in any of the common areas.

Family Café

Located across from the Reception Desk at the main entrance, the Family Café is a place to relax and have some refreshment. There is a gourmet coffee machine that makes espresso, cappuccino, lattes, hot chocolate, and other specialty drinks in addition to regular coffee. Our Cooks, volunteer bakers, and our friends from Nothing Bundt Cakes keep the Family Café stocked with delicious treats – help yourselves!

Family Lounges

There is a Family Lounge at the end of both patient wings with couches, chairs, and coffee tables. Opposite each Family Lounge are French doors that open to the south side pathway leading to the Family Garden and the Walking Labyrinth. The doors open wide enough to allow patient beds to be wheeled through. If your loved one wishes to spend time outdoors please speak with your care team.

Great Room

Located on the north side of the main corridor, between the two patient wings, the Great Room is a beautiful, spacious place for visitors. Relax by the large natural gas fireplace (on/off switch is on the right side) in a variety of armchairs and sofas. A generous group of musically inclined donors provided a Steinway & Sons concert-grade baby grand piano that resides in this room, occasionally played by Music Therapists (and interns), volunteers, and guest pianists. There are periodically special musical performances in the Great Room; ask a Volunteer or Receptionist for more information.

Family Kitchen & Dining Area

Directly across from the Great Room, the Family Dining Area can seat up to 25 people comfortably. It features a full residential kitchen with an oven/range, two microwaves, refrigerator, and dishwasher. You are welcome to prepare meals in the Family Kitchen. For everyone’s safety, the oven/range controls must be unlocked by a Pathways staff member using a code. Please speak with a Pathways Inpatient Care Center team member if you wish to cook in the Family Kitchen. We ask that you please clean up after you use the area as it is a shared space.

Reflection Room/Interfaith Chapel

Patients and visitors of all faiths are welcome to visit the Reflection Room / Interfaith chapel for prayer and meditation 24 hours a day. We offer small memorial services for our patients, see chapel brochure for more information.

  1. Don Reichert

    Don is a native of Fort Collins, CO and first became interested in this exciting field while growing up as a teenager. Living close to the mountains and an agriculture area where landscape and wildlife opportunities are abundant, Don developed a love, admiration, and respect for photography. While in college, he took the opportunity to participate in numerous photo classes, outdoor photo workshops and seminars and used the educational and hands-on practical experience to expand his interest and technical knowledge of photography. He used those academic and practical hands-on experiences to expand the fundamental skills and keen eyesight to capture unique photographic images.

  1. Rae Ann Garrett

    From as far back as I can remember I have always had my hands in the Arts. A self-taught artist starting at the age of four, my creative journey began with pencil, pens, and pastels. At the age of ten I started writing music on the piano and at twelve I picked up my first paintbrush and began using oils and acrylics – painting my world and visions in abstract. In college, I discovered sculpting in clay...and photography. After learning on an old Pentax 35MM and spending many hours in the darkroom, I still follow the same logic – wait for the shot, so as not to waste film. To this day, I can still smell the solutions of the dark room. I set aside photography for a time and continued to paint abstract art. That is until I received my first digital camera. Once armed with this new tool, I began capturing the beauty of the earth.
    I hope that through my photography I inspire others to stop, look around and be witness to all the beauty that is around us. Art is the journey the soul takes. I find this magic in the ordinary days.

  1. Beth Lighthouse

    Most of my life I have enjoyed painting, but there was a particular moment when my son and I were painting together, and I realized how much I love painting, and I made a promise to myself to try to paint every day, and I have been painting almost every day since. I am awed by how much painting has changed my life. Life is too short and precious not to be spent doing what we love. I am amazed at how the more I paint, the easier and more intuitive it becomes. Lately I have been inspired by dynamic clouds and sky, the blues and greens of rolling mountains and trees, the contrast of orange sunlit rocks against brilliant-dark blue sky... I love to paint scenes that have a special meaning to me in some way. I strive to bring the feeling of nature into my paintings with brilliance and color. I hope to share all this with you.

  1. Billie J. Colson

    Billie J. Colson was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas. She met and married her husband Ron in Houston in the early 80’s. They then moved to DeSoto, a suburb of Dallas and started a family. There Billie became involved with the DeSoto Art League and served as president for the organization from 1994-1996. She and her family relocated to Loveland Colorado in the summer of 1998. Colson has been painting and drawing since she was old enough to hold a pencil. She has always had a passion for drawing animals. For most of her younger years she drew horses, over the years she starting doing many other subjects. Since moving to Loveland Colorado Colson got very involved in the art community. In June of 2005 Colson inspired the downtown art walk known as “A Night on the Town”. This walk includes not only galleries & studios but the other downtown Loveland businesses as well. Night on the Town celebrates the 15th Anniversary in June. In October 2006 Colson opened Independence Gallery in downtown Loveland Colorado and invited a dozen other area artists to join her in this venue. In 2009 Colson organized Loveland’s first annual artist’s studio tour. In 2010 she started writing an art column for the “Loveland Connection” a local newspaper. One of her proudest accomplishments is her annual fundraiser 65 Roses for Cystic Fibrosis. After Colson’s granddaughter was born with the genetic disease in 2008, she decided to host a fundraiser during the month of February and inviting other artists to donate miniature paintings of roses (making for a great valentine) with all proceeds benefitting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. To date over $140,000 has been raised through this cause. Colson plans to continue exploring the world of art. Her choice of subject matter is always changing for she say’s “there are so many wonderful and beautiful things to paint.”

  1. Renee Walkup

    Renee Walkup grew up loving art and nature in Kansas City while influenced by her father, an accomplished oil painter. She graduated from Stephens College with a concentration in Art. After a career as a professional speaker and international corporate trainer, Renee found herself pursuing her dream of creating mosaics. Her 3D mosaic work has ranged from furniture to wall hangings, vases, clocks, and musical instruments, using reclaimed and upcycled materials. Renee’s inspiration comes from stunning sunrises, wide skies, plants, and wildlife near her newly-adopted home in Northern Colorado. Taking advanced mosaic classes from professionals around the world provides new learning experiences for Renee, while she procures interesting pieces to include in her work. When not in her studio, Renee volunteers in and around Fort Collins and hikes the many trails around Northern Colorado.

  1. Ronda Kimbrow

    I am a self-taught Landscape and Nature photographer based in beautiful Loveland, Colorado. My passion is capturing the beauty around me through my photography. There is nothing better than to go explore our rivers and lakes or to take a hike in the beautiful mountains of Colorado! Sunrises are my special moments that I love to photograph the most. The stillness of the morning, the soft colors that the morning light provides. My hope is when you view my images, you will feel the peace and tranquility in that moment. Whether I am shooting Landscapes, Florals, or Wildlife it is always a pleasure shooting God's creations.

  1. The Hiking Mermaid

    Born and raised in San Antonio Texas my father had a photography biz when he was younger, so he kept a camera in my hands from a very early age. I loved how I was able to capture my memories in one place, allowing me to truly remember a place at that exact time. Now living in Estes Park, Colorado, I find myself capturing the beauty Mother nature holds, to share it with others. If I can move my audience to really care about a place then I have succeeded through the medium of pictures which build compassion and emotion. Photography remains a passion of mine simply because I love the feeling that I get when someone comes across an image of mine that they connect with, that inspires them to get out and see the world around for themselves.

  1. Ugljesa Janjic

    Born in Belgrade, Serbia in 1958, Ugljesa Janjic is one of the more exiting and original watercolor painters of today. His passion for Colorado landscapes, its mountains and rivers, reflections and atmosphere come to life and shine through his art. With masterful strokes and an exceptionally spontaneous style in use of light and shadow, sharp contrasts and bold use of intense bursts of color, his watercolors breathe the outdoors of incredible beauty that only nature can produce. There is a unique spiritual connection one has to feel when contemplating Janjic’s original watercolors. Lightness and texture of paper so delicately manipulated and hardly disturbed invokes the memories of nature, wind and snow that his paintings depict.

  1. Jenifer Cline

    Jenifer Cline is drawn to color and texture, emotions and the challenge of light. Drawing on her experience with three dimensional works, Jenifer explores how color and light create shape and depth in a painting. Her inspiration for painting comes from a wide range of subjects including landscapes, wildlife, and portraiture. Plein Air work is her particular favorite focus as it allows the artist to portray the immediacy of the moment. Her work resides in public and private collections nationally, and she has exhibited in numerous juried shows and won many awards. “The depth of color and texture an artist can achieve with oils produces an excitement and a responsibility in the creative process. The challenge is to find a way for your creative vision to speak to your audience.”

  1. C.C. Opiela

    The art of C.C. Opiela is bold, dramatic, sensual and cabalistic. This is an artist leaping beyond the conventions of a known reality and beckoning the viewer to follow her to enter the landscapes of infinity. With an open ended vision she peers into reality and beyond which is seen. Her paintings are a record of her mystical journeys of bright colors, light, and textures. The dance into the mysteries of life and the glimpses into the secret delights is served deliciously by her unique, creative and expansive vision. Working with experimental, mixed water-media on paper and canvas, the artist creates her expressions of an abstract world. C.C. Opiela was born in Chicago, IL. At 16 she began her art studies at the famed Art Institute of Chicago. Her Saturday’s and free time were committed to immersing herself into her studies, fueling her passion for art, and surrounding herself with great masters of art. After attending art school, C.C continued her studies, in psychology and philosophy. The mixture of knowledge and understanding of the psyche is what allows C.C. to interpret what she reads on an emotional level and translate it into the visual medium of abstract design. She has been the recipient of many awards. C.C. has exhibited in numerous one-woman shows and her works are included in major collections throughout the US and abroad.

Patient Meals
Patient meals are prepared with consideration of special dietary needs. Most patients will receive a daily menu to select appropriate foods. Please check with staff if you have questions about meals or if outside food is brought to patient’s room.
Ice Machine

An ice machine is located in the Cafe across from the Reception Desk at the main entrance. Please let staff or a volunteer know if you need ice and they can assist you.

Walking Labyrinth

Walking the Labyrinth can be a time of reflection, prayer, or time to simply walk for our visitors at the Pathways Hospice Care Center.

Care Center Team

At Pathways, we use an interdisciplinary approach to hospice care. Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Registered Nurses, Certified Nursing Assistants, Social Workers, Chaplains, and Volunteers all collaborate with you to create and implement a plan of medical, emotional, and spiritual care that meets your needs.

Schedules
The Pathways Hospice Care Center nursing staff works in two shifts, with a brief overlap in shifts to allow complete communication among staff about current patients.

Pathways for Grief & Loss

Grief is a normal reaction to loss and grief support is an important part of the Pathways Hospice mission. We recognize the importance of support for those who are grieving and are available to help you through this process in many ways. Pathways for Grief & Loss counselors and programs are available to help find your way through grief; we offer a variety of support and counseling options to fit your individual needs.

Individual Counseling

Pathways Hospice offers one-on-one sessions with professional grief counselors as a way of assisting one through grief. We offer this for individuals, couples, families, and children. We also offer art therapy for both adults and children. Play therapy is also available for children.

Support Groups

We offer a variety of support groups for individuals in grief, recognizing that everyone grieves differently. Most groups are offered on a regular basis and are tailored to the unique needs of the group. Groups include:

Newly Bereaved

A three-week group for persons in the early months of loss.

On Our Own

Meets the second Wednesday of every month and is for widowed adults. This is an open group, and anyone is welcome.

Family Grief Connection

Offers together time for families as well as specific groups for children, teens, and adults.

Mourning After
An eight-week group for adults in grief.

Creative Therapies

Because Pathways Hospice recognizes the uniqueness in grief, we offer expressive therapies as well.

Special Programs

Pathways Hospice also offers special programs throughout the year, which include educational programs on surviving holidays, a summer grief education series, and summer and winter Memorial Services.

Airport

Denver International Airport (DIA) is the closest large commercial airport. DIA is the 3rd busiest airport in the world, leave plenty of time to arrive and pass-through security on outbound flights. Travel time to DIA is approximately (1) hour and (15) minutes using the toll road E470 and approximately (1) hour (30) minutes if you choose to avoid the toll road.
To reach DIA using the E-470 toll road:
  • Head east on Carpenter Road/CO-392 E/East County Road 32 - 4.4 miles
  • Use the right lane to take I-25 S ramp
  • Take southbound I-25 - 33 miles
  • Take exit 228 for E-470 toward Airport/Limon
  • Keep left at the fork, follow signs for E-470/Airport/Limon - 18 miles
  • Take exit 28 for Pena Blvd towards DIA
  • Keep left at the fork to continue on Exit 28A following signs to DIA/Pena Blvd
